JEC World 2017: ThermHex shows honeycomb cores with new 5 mm cell size

The innovative product variations enable new applications for polypropylene honeycomb cores

Halle (Saale) / Paris, 9 February 2017

ThermHex presents new product variations of its polypropylene (PP) honeycomb cores with a cell size of 5 mm at the world’s largest trade fair for composite materials, the JEC World in Paris, from 14 to 16 March in hall 5A stand P22. In addition ThermHex informs about the unique continuous production process together with EconCore.

PP honeycomb cores with new cell size

ThermHex presents its PP honeycomb cores with a thickness of 10 to 12.7 mm and a newly developed cell size of 5 mm at the JEC World 2017 for the first time. The smaller cell size enables a perfect surface quality and allows new application possibilities for the honeycomb cores. For example, the new product variations can be used as an alternative to foam cores or resign-impregnated nonwoven core mats.

For the honeycomb cores with a thickness of 12 mm an 12.7 mm (1/2 inch), the new cell size also results in an optimized production process. With a newly developed vacuum forming roll, ThermHex increases resource and cost efficiency and achieves higher production capacity for both new product variations.

ThermHex is currently working on the development of further PP honeycomb cores with a smaller cell size. “Even in the thickness range from 5 mm to 6 mm, we can offer our honeycomb cores with a 4 mm cell size”, says ThermHex CEO Jochen Pflug. “With conventional production techniques, honeycomb cores with such small cell sizes are only available for aerospace applications.”

Continuous production process creates cost advantages

In addition to the new product variations, ThermHex also provides information about its worldwide-patented production process for PP honeycomb cores. It allows the use of honeycomb cores even in applications, where they have not been used by now due to cost concerns. The reason for this is the high degree of automation in production, which results in significantly lower production costs, compared to competitors.
